True Love Comes from a Giving Heart

God's love, love, relationshipsLove is in the air, or so the cliché goes, as Valentine’s Day draws near. Everything associated with the holiday has exploded virtually everywhere you go! It’s pretty unavoidable—whether you’re a fan of the holiday or not, you have to hear all about love and romance. However, our culture’s perception of love is rather skewed. The bombardment of holiday gifts, cards, candy, etc. masks the true essence of love. It tries to tell us that love is all about feelings and sensuality; it’s all about what you can get from another person.

However, for those of us who have a relationship with God, love means something a little different. Here is what the Apostle John says about it:

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. (1 John 4:10-11, NIV)

According to God, the true heart of love is giving to others. He gave us the perfect example of this through the work of His Son Jesus on the cross. He showed us that the greatest kind of love comes from a heart that is sacrificial and unconditional. It is more concerned with the well-being of the receiver than with receiving anything in return (Acts 20:35). It is willing to endure pain to heal broken connections and rectify offenses. It keeps no record of wrongs. It is completely focused on creating and maintaining whole relationships. And we as Christians received this love when we accepted the gift of salvation.

So what does that mean for us? It means that as this incredible love from God overflows our hearts, we may pour the love of God into the lives of others. We are able to show and give true love to them! While we can’t atone for anyone else, we certainly can love them sacrificially and give of ourselves for their benefit.

As we enter the week leading up to Valentine’s day, let’s advertise what the true heart of love is: the love of God flowing through our hearts to others.

This will be our theme for this month—getting to the heart of Love and Relationships.

Affirmation for today: I allow love to flow from me as a gift to others. (Driving Reflections—Love & Relationships)
