Renewed in the Spirit Every Day

God's tender mercies renew meWe live in a world full of distractions and temptations. I have found it to be true in my life that when I let the concerns of my circumstances distract me, I avoid God. When I get stressed and down, I avoid God. This happens all the time. The cycle can seem kind of depressing. However, God is faithful and He always comes through. He reminds me of Himself and I realize that by avoiding Him, I am just prolonging my hardship.

Because I am His daughter, God wants to renew me every day with the love and mercy that He has bestowed upon me. Likewise, when you are burdened or depressed, He wants to lift you up. He wants you to rise out of the pit like an eagle, healthy and strong. He wants to remind you who you are because of Him.

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
bless his holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits,
who forgives all your iniquity,
who heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
who satisfies you with good
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
(Psalm 103:1-5)

As I read this Psalm today, I was reminded of a hymn from my childhood, “Create in Me a Clean Heart.” The chorus, though inspired by a completely different Psalm, exactly expresses the heart of Psalm 103.

“Create in me a clean heart, my Father.
Renew a right spirit in me.
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation;
May Christ be seen in me.”

The Lord renews you so that you will lift up your eyes and remember Him and thereby restore your relationship with Him. He has given love and mercy and many other benefits to you so that you will see who He is—how good and faithful and majestic He is.

As you are made new in Christ day by day, you have a tremendous opportunity to make Him famous in your life. Don’t dwell in your hardship a moment longer. Let Him renew you, again and again!

Affirmation for today: God’s love and tender mercies have renewed my spirit.
(Psalm 103:4-5, Driving Reflections—Transformation / Renewal)
